A Panorama of Landscape Pictures at LUMAS
The main subject of landscape art is a wide view. It’s the desire to hold still the naturally occurring grandeur of the world around us that defines this theme. At LUMAS, our galleries are home to extensive editions by world-renowned artist and the up-and-coming talents carving out a new visual perspective—expertly curated and ready to buy.
A Brief History of Landscape Art
The landscape has long figured into art around the world. Landscapes have been both imagined or based on real scenes, with the tradition dating back over 1000 years. The early Chinese landscapes were simple black ink wash impressions, predominantly of mountains. By contrast, the ancient Romans were using beautiful nature pictures to decorate the rooms of important buildings.
In Europe, landscape art re-emerged in the late medieval period, but it wasn’t until the Renaissance that it once again became a central focus with its heavily idealised pastoral images of the Mediterranean. Throughout the 19th and 20th century the romanticised idea of landscapes continued, and eventually spread to the United States. Now one of the most developed themes in art, pictures of landscapes speak on a personal, national, and often a global level.
Photography has brought a new aesthetic to landscape art. The emphasis of landscape images in photography is coherent composition in nature; placing the most alluring forms in such a way that the brain views them as a whole. While this form is essentially literal, the use of various photo techniques such as lighting, focus, and exposure can give landscape photography an interpretive quality. It can include references to human activity, such as urban sprawls and industrial infrastructure, or it can observe nature in its unaffected state, with the focus primarily on dramatic forms, weather, and animals.
Landscape images reflect the diversity of nature. They can range from dramatic mountain peaks and violent storms to soft, often mystical scenes that play with light. With over 18,000 editions in our portfolio, LUMAS is the ideal place to explore landscape art. We work with established and emerging photographers from around the world. In our expertly curated galleries you can explore landscape art through the ages in our unsigned open editions. Alternatively, our limited edition runs of original photography are hand-signed and come complete with a certificate of authentication.
Quality Landscape Pictures: the LUMAS Collection
At LUMAS, quality is our top priority. We provide a professional, affordable alternative to museum gift shops and run-of-the-mill posters. Thanks to our partnership with WhiteWall, all of our landscape art editions are produced to the highest standards possible using the most modern processes. First, our landscape images are printed using an advanced 6-colour system. So, your print perfectly replicates the original colours in their original brilliance. Following this, a UV light treatment is applied to harden the ink—helping to prevent the colours from bleeding, while also providing a much more durable finished product.
We believe you should be able to experience owning art without compromising on quality. For our photography, we pair tradition with the latest photochemical technologies to produce outstanding pictures of landscapes that last for generations. Using the original negatives, WhiteWall employs a state-of-the-art Lambda room-filling exposure system to create a certified edition. All Lambda photographs are printed onto Fujicolor’s best Crystal Archive Paper, providing an impeccable work that will retain its lustre for years to come.
Professional Framing and Mounting for Landscape Images
Finally, we consult with the artists and craftsmen every step of the way to find the perfect frame. That way, you can get even more enjoyment out of owning a piece of art. All of our frames are produced by WhiteWall and are made to measure. Available in coloured wood or matte aluminium, WhiteWall frames are built to last. For a more dramatic impression, we also provide professional mounting. Using a lightweight aluminium composite panel, the landscape image is pressed and then sealed beneath a protective layer of laminate or acrylic glass. Ideal for large wall spaces; it’s the perfect way to showcase scenic images.
