Miami Houses

With a hint of irony, French photographer Léo Caillard refers to the small, brightly coloured lifeguard huts guarding the bathing areas off Miami’s broad sandy beaches as “Miami Houses”. By deliberately shooting them in a modest, uniform style, always with the ocean in the background and underneath a lightly clouded sky, their architectonic individuality and bold colours are revealed in full.

Caillard’s approach is reminiscent of the important and stylistically influential photographic duo Bernd and Hilla Becher. They documented countless water towers in the Ruhr valley over a period of decades through unpretentious yet detailed black and white photography. The story of how the lifeguard huts came into existence is also one worth telling: Following the devastating Hurricane Andrew in 1995 they were rebuilt and completely redesigned with the help of local designers and artists. Though battered by wind and weather ever since, their remarkable appearance remains unaffected.
